The Wedding Venue Questions Couples Should Ask — From a DJ’s Perspective
When couples tour wedding venues, the biggest considerations are usually the aesthetic (and honestly, we agree, it matters!), the staff, and what the venue offers. But after DJing hundreds of weddings at venues across Sioux Falls, the Midwest, and throughout the United States, we’ve learned there are a lot of behind-the-scenes details that can make a big difference on your wedding day.
Before you fall in love with a venue, here are some questions we recommend asking.
Do You Have Preferred or Restricted Vendors?
Ask whether the venue has a preferred vendor list—and whether there are vendors they won’t allow. This can apply to catering, photography, planners, decorations, late-night food, photo booths, and DJs. If you already have vendors in mind, you’ll want to know about any restrictions before signing a contract.
What Does the Power Situation Look Like?
For your DJ, ask where power is located and whether it’s easily accessible. Will the DJ need to run long power cables? Are there dedicated circuits? If your ceremony and reception are in different spaces, how far does the DJ need to move between them?
Also ask whether the DJ has a designated setup location or flexibility to position equipment where it makes the most sense for the room.

What Exactly Does “11 PM” Mean?
This is a surprisingly important question. Does “music off at 11 PM” mean the party ends at 11, or does everyone—including vendors—need to be out of the building by 11?
Those are two very different timelines. If you want a later reception, make sure you understand the venue’s end-of-night requirements, including vendor teardown.
What Are the Lighting and Sound Restrictions?
Ask what the venue’s lighting looks like once the sun goes down. Can the house lights be dimmed? Are there permanent lights or twinkle lights that stay on? Will your DJ need to bring additional lighting?
It’s also worth asking about sound restrictions, volume limits, noise ordinances, and whether there are requirements regarding speaker placement or equipment.
How Does the Coordinator Work With Vendors?
If the venue has an in-house coordinator, ask how they communicate with your vendors. Who handles the timeline? Who gives the DJ cues for dinner, speeches, or the grand entrance? How are last-minute changes communicated?
A clear communication process can make your wedding day much smoother.

Where Can We Put the Photo Booth?
Don’t automatically put the photo booth wherever there’s an open corner. Ask what spaces are available and look for a location that is visible and convenient without blocking the dance floor, bar, buffet, or major walkways.
What Fees or Requirements Should We Know About?
Finally, ask about vendor-related fees, insurance requirements, setup fees, overtime, security deposits, cleanup charges, and anything else that might not be included in the initial venue price.
If the venue requires vendors to carry insurance, simply ask your vendors: “Does your business carry the type of liability insurance this venue requires, and can you provide a certificate of insurance if needed?” Most professional wedding vendors will be familiar with this process.
The perfect venue isn’t just one that looks amazing in photos. It’s one that works well for the people, vendors, timeline, and party you’re planning. Asking these questions before you book can help you avoid surprises later—and give your DJ and the rest of your vendor team the information they need to help make your wedding day run smoothly, so you have a stress-free wedding day.
